David Bowie was not widely known as an avid art collector until quite recently, but the iconic artist amassed a remarkable personal collection and it is due to go on sale at Sotheby’s next month in a 3 part auction entitled Bowie/Collector.

The impressive collection is as eclectic as the man himself, with pieces by Damien Hirst, Frank Auerbach and Stanley Spencer as well as a host of lesser known artists brought together in a 350 strong collection.

Bowie’s capacity for reinvention had kept fans enthralled for decades and this is reflected in the variety of the artwork he owned, with pieces ranging from paintings to furniture from post war Britain to contemporary African art.

His family have kept many artworks which hold particular personal significance but a spokesman for his estate said that they wished to “give others the opportunity to appreciate – and acquire – the art and objects he so admired”, which leads to the combination of art going to auction. It has a collective value of in excess of £10m and the full auction catalogue can be viewed here.

The piece expected to sell for the most at the auction is Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Air Power which is estimated to fetch up to £3.5m when it goes up for sale in part one of the auction on November 10th.

Much of the art in his collection has a backstory regarding the artist or his avid passion for collecting and deep intellectual engagement with the artworks he owned, in the case of Air Power, Bowie played Basquiat’s mentor Andy Warhol in the 1996 film Basquiat.

Bowie released 27 studio albums in a career spanning more than 40 years before his death earlier this year. His last album, Blackstar, was released on his 69th birthday, just days before his death.
