Three Lots, Three Fantastic Stories

In this auction spotlight, we have chosen three lots which tell fascinating stories that go beyond their aesthetic look to reveal a history and heritage known to a few.

From the colour changing diamond to the Le Mans-inspired Richard Mille, what are some of the biggest auctions stories at William George?

Lot 3 - Richard Mille RM11-02 – Le Mans Edition

Richard Mille is a known car enthusiast and became the official timekeeper and partner of the Le Mans Classic when it started in 2002.

This event brings together 80 years of automobile history as they navigate the historic mecca of motor racing, Le Mans.

Each year, Richard Mille creates a watch which is dedicated to that particular event and this watch comes from the 2016 edition.

The design of the watch is that of a large chronograph in a tonneau-shape and adorned in the famous green and white colours of the competition.

Limited to 150 pieces, this Richard Mille is an exquisite timepiece. With an estimate between £100,000 and £107,000, you can view this lot in our Luxury Watches auction now!

Lot 47 - Antique Aneroid Barometer Desk C.19th/20th

From the highs of Le Mans, we move to this aneroid barometer. This fantastic instrument is used to measure pressure and thus reveal the weather.

First invented around 1844, any changes to air pressure level can cause the box inside the instrument to expand or contract. This, in turn, will cause levers to move and reveal the current weather!

With a design which includes a royal coat of arms from the UK, it's finished in gilt and silvered metal. Containing only a few insignificant nibbles to the marble, this would change the dynamic of any room setting.

This lot carries an estimate between £750 and £850, you can bid for this lot in Art, Antiques and Collectables which ends on Wednesday!

Lot 45 - Alexandrite Colour Change Diamond Ring

In our article: Fancy-Coloured Diamonds - Orange, Chameleon, Purple and Pink, we explored some of the finest fancy-coloured diamonds in the world.

You learned that the chameleon fancy-coloured diamond is renowned for changing colour when exposed to heat or ultra-violet light.

In this auction, we have an Alexandrite stone which also has the ability to change colour when exposed to varying degrees of light.

Certified by GIA, this stunning ring is from the Natural Chrysoberyl family. Weighing in at over 10 carats, this stone can change from a Brownish, Greenish Yellow colour to Brown Yellow!

With an estimate between £40,000 and £44,000, you can view this lot in our Luxury Jewellery Sale now!

Final Words

The Richard Mille watch is a remarkable piece. Carrying the heritage of Le Mans in a tonneau-shaped design, is a fantastic partner for a car enthusiast. The spirit of the Le Mans Classic is certainly alive in that watch, With only 150 made, you can be sure that the feeling offered by this watch would only be known by a few!

The aneroid barometer is a fantastic piece of engineering which illustrates the ingenuity used at the time to tell the weather. Owning a piece of that history would adorn any collection of antiques and novelties for your home and will certainly spark a few conversations!

Finally, the colour changing diamond illustrates the fascinating world of diamonds. The ability to colour change from exposure to light just reminds us of how much we do not know about our own planet. Even if we may never know what caused their colour to change, we can still marvel at it.
