Record Sale for Hermès Birkin Bag
Hermès is no stranger to auction records.
The Birkin Bag is one of the most sought-after handbags in the world. The waiting list is said to be 6 years long. Hermès is tight-lipped about the number made each year and this has caused their prices to catapult in auctions.
The Story Behind the Birkin
The story behind the Birkin is as remarkable as their prices. Jane Birkin, the English-French actress and singer had a chance encounter with the director of Hermès on a flight from London to Paris.
Completely frustrated with the handbags at the time, she helped Hermès design her ideal bag. The bag was released and became one of the most famous bags in the world.
Notable owners are J-Lo, Madonna, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and more.
The bag in question is a 10-year old Himalaya Birkin bag adorned with a white-gold 18-carat diamond lock. The estimate was between £100,000 and £150,000. The bag went on to sell for £162,500.
Made from Nile crocodile skin, it was graded at 2 which means it contains no clear flaws.
The world record for a handbag sold in auction was also a Birkin that sold for £253,000 at auction in Hong Kong in 2017.
The Himalayan Birkin was in its first European auction and already set itself a new record. During the same auction, A 2006 blue Birkin was sold for £100,000.
As Hermès Birkin bags continue to set records at auction, there is no doubt it helps to illustrate just how iconic they are.
Their heritage and appeal is second to none and it's etched itself into the history of fashion as one of the ultimate handbags.
