Why we Love World-Records
Read time 4-5 mins
Holding the accolade of being the world’s most expensive handbag is not easy. In fact, holding any world record is not easy. Why? Someone once said that “Records are made to be broken”.
Records are Made to be Broken
Is it true that some world records will stand forever? Are we going to see someone score more than the 1,200 career goals achieved by Pele? Or win more grand slams, in open-era tennis, than Serena Williams who has 23? Or sell a painting for more than the Salvator Mundi which sold for $450m in 2017?
It’s certainly possible. Records are broken all the time. How many times have you beaten your previous best?
The 1001 Nights Diamond Purse by House of Mouawad
When you’re designing your world-beating handbag, how do you create something which is going to stand the test of time? You become overwhelmed with questions such as the shape, colour, feel and various other elements which will eventually become your vision - your challenger.
However, the end product may well and truly become what you designed it to be, but it also becomes more than that. In fact, you can argue that it becomes a work of art.
Seeing is Believing
The Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse takes a few seconds before you finish believing what you are seeing. But what are you seeing?
4,517 diamonds went into Night Diamond Purse which is comprised of:
- 105 Yellow Diamonds
- 56 Pink Diamonds
- 4356 Colourless Diamonds
This required 8,800 hours of artisan-like craftsmanship to bring it all together. Imagine that? That’s over a year, literally.
The cost? £2.35m.
How many Carats Are Too Many Carats?
More Carats than a Diamond Found in a Mine.
An impressive metric for any jewellery aficionado is that it’s classified as 381.92 carats which is impressive for a diamond found out of a mine, let alone a purse. This helps to distinguish it from the likes of Birkin, Hermès, Fuchsia and Chanel.
Diamond carat weight forms one of the 4 C's (Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat) used to describe diamonds. Take a look at our article "4 C’s of The Diamond World Series – Carat" here.
However, Chanel does have their own Robot Bag. Read it here
Similar to projects such as the Bugatti Veyron, the $200,000 smartwatch by Tag Heuer or the 24k Gold Phone, they are embodiments of our ingenuity and desire to push each other to new lengths. This has been illustrated by Koenigsegg who are attempting to hit 300mph.
These products are statements by their creator as they attempt to redefine convention. William George and Co look forward to writing about the new world beater.
