Meet the World's Most Expensive Watch
Read time 5-6 mins
The most expensive watch in the world was created in 2014 by Graff Diamonds. It features 110 carats and more colours than what you will find in a rainbow. It's a true marvel. In our previous article "The Most Expensive Purse in the World", which you can read here, we answered the question of how records are made to be broken.
The Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse will certainly take some beating but the Graff Diamonds Hallucination that is currently retailing for $55m must surely be the pinnacle of jewellery watch design? Or is there a brand who are looking to usurp the London-based jeweller?
Who are Graff Diamonds?
Laurence Graff founded Graff Diamonds in 1960. The brand has grown to operate 50 different stores around the world and create exquisite jewellery pieces including Rings, Pendants, Watches and more. They are known to be adorned with gems such as Emeralds, Sapphires or Rubies or yellow, white and rare diamonds.
Their expertise across these areas came together to give us the aptly-named hallucination. What's so incredible about this watch is how many visible pieces of jewellery have been brought together to create what is seeming a piece of art. But what is it?
What is the Graff Hallucination?
With a staggering price tag of $55m, it confirms that Graff Diamond's Hallucination is the most expensive watch in the world. The idea behind the watch was conceived by the founder of the company, Lawrence Graff, wanted to showcase his love affair with diamonds and this inspired his hallucination project.
"For many years, I have thought about creating a truly remarkable watch that illustrates our all consuming passion for diamonds. The Hallucination has made my dream a reality." Laurence Graff
Lawrence Graff is a self-taught gemologist who is regarded as shaping the UK jewellery industry. His contribution earned him an OBE from the Queen.
The Big Unveiling
When you create a $55m watch, what do you do next? You could post a picture on social media? It would probably be one of the most expensive selfies in history. You could even hold an event to celebrate your achievement? What if you upped the ante and chose the biggest stage of them all?
How about the biggest event in jewellery and watchmaking? The Graff Diamond Hallucination made its debut at Baselworld 2014 and stole a lot (all) of the headlines. If you would like to read more about Baselworld then you can read our article "Baselworld 2018: What Happens at the Biggest Watchmaking and Jewellery Event?" here.
Perhaps what got their attention was the sheer quality of the stones being used. Fancy light, intense and vivid were all used to adorn the watch.. The artisans behind it spent thousands of hours fusing these diamonds together to create this masterpiece.
Our favourite feature is the fact that the Hallucination's clasp is only revealed when pressure is applied to specific diamond!
This watch will take some beating. An eagle-eyed viewer may see the invisible platinum setting on the watch which creates the illusion that the diamonds are held together. The watch is able to portray the skill and innovation of Graff Diamonds.
